Description
CARAM Asia is a regional network working on migration and health as well as on the protection and rights of migrant workers, with a particular focus on female migrants. Formed in 1997, CARAM Asia has developed into a network of 42 member organisations. CARAM Asia holds Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Its programmes are guided by four pillars: Participatory Action Research (PAR), national and regional advocacy, coalition-building, and capacity-building for community-based organisations and NGOs working with migrant communities. The network's regional programmes are prioritised in line with three key thematic areas: Migrant Workers' Rights; Migration, Health and HIV; and Migration, Development and Globalization. Each programme area is managed and implemented through a task force comprising member organisations of the network. One of CARAM's most notable initiatives is the Foreign Domestic Workers campaign, which aims to see domestic work recognised as an economic activity and included as a legally protected form of employment. To this end, the campaign engages in awareness-raising activities, lobbying, and advocacy.
